Diego's Journey: Overcoming Obstacles and Embracing Opportunities in Bolivia

“I want to continue training, I want to study to expand my knowledge. Thanks to the fact that I am working I can help my mother with the household expenses and the rest, I’m saving for my studies.”” Diego, 21 years old

Meet Diego, a vibrant young man from Santa Cruz, whose journey embodies transformation and growth. In the year 2023, Diego joined the POWER 4 AY Project in Bolivia, a decision which would shape his future towards a remarkable new pathway of wellbeing, empowerment and resilience. 

Diego joined the project after serving two years of confinement within the walls of the CENVICRUZ Reintegration Center for adolescents in conflict with the law, where he grappled with uncertainty and fear of a future of exclusion and discrimination. After his release, self-doubt loomed large as he contemplated reintegrating into society.

 Initially reserved and hesitant Diego carried difficult past experiences that made him a very withdrawn young man. However, soon he found solace and a welcoming space in the project´s Life Skills training sessions. As these sessions unfolded, he discovered a newfound sense of self-worth and confidence. “I liked that they taught me to have self-esteem, to believe in myself. I’m very shy, but now I can talk and relate to people” reflects Diego, recalling the invaluable lessons on self-esteem and communication. With each passing workshop, Diego blossomed. He not only honed his skills but also found his voice within collaborative workgroups. 

After Life Skills and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights training, Diego progressed to vocational skills training in Customer Service and Sales where his eagerness and enthusiasm set him apart, earning accolades for his remarkable progress. 

Upon completing his training, Diego secured a job at Burger King, where his noteworthy dedication is commended by his employers. During the project´s routine monitoring they only express their satisfaction for his performance as a person who adds value and contributes responsively to his role. By the end of 2023, he was named “Employer of the Month”. 

Despite facing internal struggles and setbacks from wrong decisions he took in the past, Diego remains unwavering in his determination to carve a brighter future. Though fi nancial constraints momentarily hinder his academic aspirations, he is now able to provide support to his family while saving diligently for his long term life plan. His resolve is his beacon of hope toward his dreams of gaining a profession 

Today, Diego is an example of renewal and empowerment. He is experiencing a new life pathway determined by his own conscious decisions and self-respect. Armed with newfound confidence and a well-crafted personal development plan, he navigates life’s challenges with confidence. His journey underscores the transformative power of self-belief and perseverance, inspiring others to embrace their potential and forge their paths towards success.
