With the aim of reducing school dropout, increasing school re-enrolment, strengthening young people education achievements as well as education service providers the POWER 4 AY Programme implements an array of strategies and best practices.
Strengthen functional literacy and numeracy is essential in contexts where young people face challenges and limited access to education opportunities. Through a powerful methodology, strong results are achieved after 3 months of training. Furthermore, more targeted training strengthens basic competencies alongside vocational training, helping young people build essential skills for successful transitions to adulthood. To support academic achievements, the project in Nepal has developed curricula and teacher guidance for catch-up classes in English, Science, and Math which are significantly improving educational outcomes of very young adolescents. Further experiences include providing after-school support and career orientation.
Bursary support provided with engagement of allies and counterparts of private and public actors upholds the right to an education for adolescents at risk of dropping out or who have already left school. These engage families, education authorities, and organizations of persons with disabilities whilst collaboration with municipalities, private sector actors and other groups raise additional funds, successfully expanding bursary coverage. Poverty, a major obstacle to education, is addressed through parent-focused economic initiatives in Uganda, such as forming and supporting group businesses and Village Savings and Loan Associations. Through these efforts, parents generate income to support their children’s schooling. Furthermore, community awareness meetings emphasize the importance of education, especially for girls, and encourage parents and youth to commit to completing their education.
Education service providers are strengthened particularly in safeguarding, disability inclusion and gender as well as to deliver key and impactful methodologies. Furthermore, linkages are made with other services for coordinated efforts to better empower young people with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities needed for both education and career success.
